Lake Naivasha
Best Time to Visit

Location
Great Rift Valley, Kenya
Overview

Set at approximately 1,890 metres above sea level, Lake Naivasha is one of Kenya's most scenic freshwater lakes and a celebrated stop on the Great Rift Valley safari circuit. The lake is surrounded by acacia woodland, papyrus-fringed shores and dramatic Rift Valley landscapes, creating a peaceful contrast to Kenya's more traditional big-game destinations.
Despite having no visible surface outlet, Lake Naivasha remains a freshwater lake. It is fed principally by the Malewa and Gilgil Rivers, which drain from the Aberdare Mountains. The lake and its surrounding wetlands provide an important habitat for wildlife and birds and support local communities through fishing, tourism and the surrounding horticultural industry.
The lake is particularly famous for its hippopotamus population and exceptional birdlife, with more than 400 bird species recorded within the wider wetland ecosystem. Its calm waters also provide an opportunity to experience Kenya from a completely different perspective — by boat rather than from a safari vehicle.
A visit to Crescent Island offers one of the region's most distinctive wildlife experiences, with guided walking safaris among giraffes, zebras, wildebeest and other plains wildlife. Boat excursions across the lake provide close encounters with hippos and waterbirds while offering beautiful views across the Rift Valley.
Lake Naivasha is an ideal addition to a Kenya safari, particularly when combined with Hell's Gate National Park, Lake Nakuru and the wider Great Rift Valley circuit.
