Overview

Lake Elementaita is a shallow, alkaline lake nestled on the floor of Kenya's Great Rift Valley, approximately 120 kilometres northwest of Nairobi. Surrounded by volcanic landscapes, rocky escarpments, wildlife conservancies and acacia-covered plains, it offers one of Kenya's most scenic and tranquil safari experiences.
The lake and surrounding sanctuary are particularly important for birdlife. Lake Elementaita supports internationally significant populations of lesser and greater flamingos, while its shores provide an important habitat for great white pelicans, African spoonbills, pied avocets and numerous migratory waterbirds. KWS identifies the lake as one of the world's major breeding sites for the great white pelican and the only pelican breeding site in Kenya.
Lake Elementaita forms one of the three components of the Kenya Lake System in the Great Rift Valley, together with Lake Nakuru and Lake Bogoria. The UNESCO property was inscribed in 2011 under criteria (vii), (ix) and (x), recognising its exceptional scenery, ecological processes and globally important birdlife.
The lake is also a Ramsar Wetland of International Importance and an Important Bird Area, making it particularly attractive to birdwatchers, photographers and travellers interested in conservation and nature.
Beyond the lake itself, the surrounding landscape offers opportunities for wildlife viewing, walking, photography and cultural and archaeological exploration. Nearby Kariandusi contains important archaeological evidence of early human occupation, including stone tools dating back hundreds of thousands of years.
For safari travellers, Lake Elementaita is an excellent stop between Nairobi, Lake Naivasha and Lake Nakuru, adding a peaceful bird-rich experience to a classic Great Rift Valley itinerary.
