GENERAL OVERVIEW
First established as a game reserve in 1957 and declared a national park in 1970, Tarangire National Park covers 2,850 square kilometers in northern Tanzania. The park derives its name from the Tarangire River, which winds through its core and serves as the sole permanent water source for wildlife across the broader ecosystem during the long dry seasons. Characterized by iconic "upside-down" baobab trees, open acacia plains, and the expansive Silale Swamp, Tarangire supports unmatched concentrations of migratory game. During the dry months, thousands of animals migrate into the park from the surrounding Maasai Steppe, making Tarangire a vital conservation refuge for wild populations and one of East Africa’s premier elephant sanctuaries.
