Amboseli National Park
Amboseli National Park
Amboseli National Park is world-renowned for its dense populations of large-tusked African bush elephants and unobstructed, panoramic backdrop of Mount Kilimanjaro, Africa’s highest peak. Dominating a dry basin transformed by underground snowmelt springs, the park balances arid lakebeds, acacia woodlands, and lush permanent swamps, offering some of the finest photogenic wildlife encounters on the continent.

GENERAL OVERVIEW
Nestled right against the border of Tanzania, Amboseli National Park forms the core of an expansive 8,000 km² cross-border ecosystem. Despite its relatively compact size of 392 km², the park encompasses a dynamic array of habitats—from the dry, cracked bed of ancient Lake Amboseli to sulfurous underground springs, papyrus-filled swamps, open savannah grasslands, and umbrella-thorn acacia woodlands.
The park's lifeblood is Mount Kilimanjaro. Rain and melting snow from the massive volcanic peak filter through porous volcanic rock underground, surfacing decades later as crystal-clear freshwater springs in the heart of Amboseli's dry basin. These permanent wetlands, notably Enkongo Narok and Ol Okenya, create a oasis for thousands of herbivores during the dry months, attracting vast herds of elephants, buffaloes, zebras, and wildebeests. Observation Hill, a prominent volcanic conical hill near the center of the park, provides visitors with an elevated, 360-degree view of these teeming swamps and the expansive dust plains below.
Beyond its physical landscape, Amboseli is a living model for community-based conservation. The land surrounding the core national park comprises Maasai group ranches. The indigenous Maasai people have coexisted alongside wildlife for generations, and community conservancies now form crucial wildlife corridors between Amboseli, Chyulu Hills, and Tsavo West National Parks.
