The Gorilla Trekking Experience
Gorilla trekking begins early in the morning at the park headquarters, where experienced guides assign you to a gorilla family based on your fitness level. Groups of no more than eight trekkers set off into the dense, mist-shrouded forest of Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, home to roughly half the world's remaining mountain gorillas. The trek can last anywhere from one to eight hours depending on the gorilla family's location, winding through thick undergrowth, steep ravines, and lush canopy corridors.
Meeting the Gorillas
When you finally encounter the gorilla family, the experience is nothing short of transcendent. You spend one magical hour in their presence — watching silverbacks display their dominance, juveniles tussle and play, and mothers cradle their infants. The gorillas are habituated to human presence but remain wild animals, so your guide will ensure you maintain the required seven-metre distance. The hour passes all too quickly, but the memories and emotional connection formed in that brief encounter last a lifetime.
Practical Preparation Tips
Gorilla trekking permits are limited and must be booked well in advance — often six to twelve months ahead. Uganda charges $700 per permit as of 2026, which is significantly less than Rwanda's $1,500 fee. Wear sturdy hiking boots, long trousers, and layers, as Bwindi's weather can shift rapidly from warm and humid to cool and misty. A walking stick and porters are available for hire and highly recommended given the challenging terrain. Bring plenty of water, snacks, a rain jacket, and a camera — but note that flash photography is prohibited during the gorilla encounter.
