ALLGEMEINER ÜBERBLICK

Meru National Park is one of Kenya's most rewarding wilderness destinations, offering a relatively secluded safari experience across 870 km² of diverse landscapes. The park was gazetted in 1966 and forms part of the larger Meru Conservation Area, a vast protected landscape incorporating Meru National Park, Kora National Park and surrounding reserves.
Unlike some of Kenya's more heavily visited parks, Meru offers a feeling of genuine wilderness. Its landscape is shaped by numerous permanent streams flowing from the Nyambene Hills, creating a fascinating mixture of riverine forest, open grassland, woodland, bushland and wetlands.
Meru is particularly important for the conservation of black rhinoceros, white rhinoceros, elephants, Grevy's zebra and other threatened wildlife. The park also offers excellent birdwatching, with KWS highlighting it as a birdwatcher's paradise.
The park has a powerful conservation and cultural story through George and Joy Adamson and Elsa the lioness, whose story became internationally famous through Born Free. Visitors can visit Elsa's Grave and other sites associated with the Adamsons' conservation legacy.
Meru is also developing as a destination for astro-tourism and guided night wildlife experiences, adding an unusual dimension to the traditional Kenyan safari.

Meru National Park is located in eastern Kenya, approximately 350 km northeast of Nairobi, near Meru town and the Nyambene Hills.

Meru generally receives fewer visitors than Kenya's most famous safari destinations such as the Maasai Mara and Amboseli. This contributes to its feeling of remote, authentic wilderness.

Pack lightweight neutral-coloured clothing, comfortable walking shoes, sun protection, insect repellent, binoculars, a camera, reusable water bottle, light rainwear and a warm layer for early-morning and evening game drives

Yes. Meru combines particularly well with Samburu, Ol Pejeta, Laikipia and Mount Kenya, creating a diverse northern and central Kenya safari circuit. It can also be incorporated into longer itineraries connecting Kenya's major wildlife destinations.

A 3-day Meru safari provides a good introduction to the park, while 4–5 days allows more time for game drives, rhino conservation experiences, nature activities and exploration of the wider Meru ecosystem.

Yes. Meru can be an excellent family safari destination, particularly for families looking for a quieter wilderness experience, diverse wildlife and educational conservation experiences. The safari itinerary and activities should be selected according to the children's ages.

KWS conservation fees vary according to visitor category. Current rates should be confirmed at the time of booking because KWS periodically revises its conservation fee structure.

Meru National Park is approximately 350 km from Nairobi by road, making it more suitable for a multi-day safari than a typical Nairobi day trip.

Meru is closely associated with conservationists George and Joy Adamson and Elsa the lioness, whose story became internationally famous through the book and film Born Free. Visitors can visit sites associated with this conservation legacy, including Elsa's Grave.

Visitors can enjoy game drives, rhino viewing, birdwatching, guided nature walks, wildlife photography, night game drives, conservation experiences, camping and astro-tourism.

Meru combines exceptional wildlife with a remote wilderness atmosphere, numerous rivers and streams, diverse vegetation, important rhino conservation and the famous Born Free legacy associated with Elsa the lioness and the Adamson family.

Yes. Meru has an established Rhino Sanctuary protecting both black and white rhinoceros, making rhino viewing one of the park's key safari experiences.

Meru is home to elephants, black and white rhinos, Grevy's zebra, reticulated giraffes, lions, leopards, cheetahs, buffaloes, hippos, crocodiles, giraffes, elands, impalas, waterbucks, hyenas and numerous bird species.

The best time to visit is generally from June to October and January to February, when dry conditions make wildlife easier to spot and roads are generally more accessible.

Meru National Park covers approximately 870 square kilometres, offering a vast and diverse wilderness of grasslands, woodland, riverine forests, wetlands and numerous permanent watercourses.
