ALLGEMEINER ÜBERBLICK
Kibale National Park protects approximately 795 km² of tropical rainforest and diverse forest habitats in western Uganda. Gazetted as a national park in 1993, it was created from the former Kibale Forest Reserve and Kibale Forest Corridor Game Reserve. The park lies approximately 20 km east of Fort Portal and forms part of the wider Kibale Conservation Area.
Kibale's greatest attraction is its exceptional population of chimpanzees, making it one of Africa's premier destinations for chimpanzee tracking. The park is also renowned for its remarkable concentration of primates, with 13 primate species recorded in the protected area.
The forest supports an extraordinary variety of wildlife, including red colobus monkeys, black-and-white colobus monkeys, L'Hoest's monkeys, blue monkeys, red-tailed monkeys and olive baboons. Forest elephants also occur within the park, while other forest mammals include buffalo, bushbuck, duikers and giant forest hogs.
Kibale is equally important for birdwatchers. Its forest ecosystem supports numerous species, including the highly sought-after green-breasted pitta and African grey parrot, alongside many other forest and Albertine Rift-associated birds.
The park is also a significant conservation landscape. Recent UWA work has highlighted forest restoration, carbon sequestration and community-benefit programmes around Kibale, demonstrating how tourism and conservation can support surrounding communities.

Kibale National Park is located in western Uganda, near Fort Portal, within the Albertine Rift. It forms part of a larger forest landscape that connects with Queen Elizabeth National Park.
Kibale is best known for its exceptional population of chimpanzees and its remarkable diversity of primates. It is widely regarded as one of Africa's premier destinations for chimpanzee trekking.
Kibale supports approximately 13 primate species, including chimpanzees, red colobus monkeys, black-and-white colobus monkeys, L'Hoest's monkeys, red-tailed monkeys and blue monkeys.
Yes. Chimpanzee trekking is one of Kibale's signature experiences. Visitors are accompanied by trained guides and trackers who help locate habituated chimpanzee communities within the forest.
Chimpanzee trekking can take anywhere from a few hours to most of a morning or afternoon, depending on where the chimpanzees are located. Once the group is found, visitors normally have a limited viewing period with the animals.
Chimpanzee habituation is an extended forest experience that allows visitors to spend considerably more time observing chimpanzees as they become accustomed to human presence. It provides a deeper and more immersive alternative to standard chimpanzee trekking.
The best overall periods are generally June to September and December to February, when conditions are relatively drier. Kibale can be visited year-round, while the wetter months offer lush scenery and excellent opportunities for birdwatching.
Besides chimpanzees, Kibale supports red and black-and-white colobus monkeys, L'Hoest's monkeys, red-tailed monkeys, blue monkeys, olive baboons, vervet monkeys and other primates. Forest elephants, buffaloes, bushbucks, duikers and giant forest hogs can also be encountered.
Yes. Kibale is an excellent birding destination, particularly for visitors interested in forest species. The park's diverse habitats support numerous forest birds, including several Albertine Rift species.
Bigodi Wetland Sanctuary is a community-managed wetland located near Kibale National Park. It is particularly popular for guided nature walks, birdwatching, primate viewing and cultural encounters, making it an excellent complement to a Kibale safari.
Kibale can be suitable for families, although chimpanzee trekking has age restrictions and involves walking through uneven forest terrain. Families should check current UWA requirements before booking and consider nature walks or other activities where appropriate.
The difficulty varies. Some chimpanzee groups may be relatively close to the trailhead, while others can require several hours of walking through dense forest and uneven terrain. A reasonable level of fitness is recommended.
Kibale can be reached by road from Kampala, usually via Fort Portal. It is also commonly combined with Queen Elizabeth National Park, making it ideal for a western Uganda safari circuit. Charter and scheduled flights can also be arranged to airstrips serving the region, followed by a road transfer.
No. Kibale National Park is not currently listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. However, it is an important conservation area within Uganda's Albertine Rift and is recognised for its exceptional biodiversity and primate populations.
A minimum of 2 nights and 3 days is recommended for a well-paced Kibale experience. This allows time for chimpanzee trekking alongside activities such as Bigodi Wetland walks, birdwatching or cultural experiences. Travellers combining Kibale with Queen Elizabeth and Bwindi may wish to spend 2–3 nights depending on their safari itinerary.
