HÄUFIG GESTELLTE FRAGEN

Maasai Mara National Reserve is located in southwestern Kenya, in Narok County, along the Tanzanian border. It forms the Kenyan section of the greater Serengeti–Mara ecosystem.

The Maasai Mara is famous for its exceptional concentration of wildlife, the Big Five, dramatic predator sightings and the annual Great Wildebeest Migration.

The best overall period is generally June to October, with July to October being particularly popular for dry-season wildlife viewing and the Great Wildebeest Migration. January and February also offer excellent game viewing.

The migration typically reaches the Mara between July and October, although exact timing varies each year depending on rainfall and grazing conditions. Large herds may arrive earlier or remain later than expected.

Yes. Maasai Mara is one of Kenya's premier destinations for seeing lions, leopards, elephants, buffaloes and rhinoceros. Wildlife sightings are never guaranteed, but the reserve offers excellent opportunities for Big Five encounters.

Visitors can encounter lions, leopards, cheetahs, elephants, buffaloes, black rhinoceros, wildebeest, zebras, giraffes, hippos, crocodiles, hyenas, topi, hartebeest, impalas, elands, gazelles and hundreds of bird species.

A Mara River crossing occurs when migrating wildebeest and zebras cross the Mara River during the Great Migration. These crossings can be spectacular but unpredictable, and visitors should never expect a crossing on a specific day.

A 3-day safari provides a good introduction to the reserve. Four to five days allows more time for exploring different areas, following wildlife movements and enjoying a less rushed safari experience.

Yes. The reserve is one of the best destinations in Africa for a first safari because of its abundant wildlife, open landscapes, excellent guiding and wide range of accommodation options.

Visitors can enjoy game drives, hot-air balloon safaris, guided nature walks, birdwatching, wildlife photography, Maasai cultural experiences, bush breakfasts, bush dinners, sundowners and conservation experiences.

Yes. Hot-air balloon safaris are one of the Mara's signature experiences, offering an aerial perspective of the savannah and wildlife, usually followed by a bush breakfast.

Yes, guided walking experiences are available in suitable areas of the wider Mara ecosystem, particularly through authorised conservancies and accommodation operators. Walking activities must follow local conservation and safety regulations.

The reserve can be reached by road from Nairobi, with the journey generally taking around 5–6 hours depending on the route, road conditions and destination within the Mara. Scheduled and charter flights from Nairobi's Wilson Airport provide a faster alternative.

Several airstrips serve different parts of the Mara ecosystem, including Keekorok, Ol Kiombo, Musiara, Serena, Kichwa Tembo and Mara North, among others. The most suitable airstrip depends on the location of the guest's accommodation.

Entry fees are determined by the Narok County Government and vary according to visitor category and season. Rates can change, so travellers should confirm the applicable fees when booking their safari.

The main reserve generally operates during daytime visiting hours, with entry typically beginning around 6:00 AM and closing around 6:00 PM. Specific access arrangements can vary by gate and accommodation location.

The national reserve is the publicly managed core protected area, while the surrounding conservancies are community-owned or community-managed conservation areas. Conservancies generally offer lower visitor densities, exclusive activities such as walking and night drives, and direct benefits to local communities.

The main reserve can become busy during peak migration months, particularly around major river-crossing areas. Staying in a private conservancy can provide a more exclusive experience with fewer vehicles.

Yes. The Mara is suitable for family safaris, with a wide range of family-friendly camps and lodges. Private conservancies can be particularly attractive for families because they may offer walking, cultural activities and more flexible safari experiences.

Yes. The Mara combines exceptionally well with Amboseli, Lake Nakuru, Lake Naivasha, Samburu, Ol Pejeta and Tsavo. It can also be followed by a beach extension to destinations such as Diani, Watamu or Malindi.

Absolutely. The Mara offers excellent resident wildlife throughout the year. Outside the peak migration period, visitors can often enjoy good predator sightings, resident herds, fewer crowds and potentially better-value accommodation.

Maasai Mara combines extraordinary wildlife density, spectacular savannah scenery, the Big Five, exceptional predator encounters, the Great Wildebeest Migration and authentic cultural experiences, making it one of Africa's most iconic safari destinations.

Yes. The Mara has an excellent selection of luxury camps and lodges, including properties in private conservancies that combine high-end accommodation with exclusive wildlife experiences and personalised guiding.
