What Is the Great Migration?

The Great Migration is the largest overland wildlife migration on Earth. Each year, approximately 1.5 million wildebeest, alongside 200,000 zebras and 500,000 Thomson's gazelles, form an enormous herd that moves clockwise through the Serengeti ecosystem in Tanzania and the Maasai Mara in Kenya. Driven by ancient instincts and the search for fresh grass, this circular journey covers roughly 1,800 miles and takes about twelve months to complete.

When and Where to See the Migration

The migration is a year-round phenomenon, but different stages offer unique highlights. From January to March, the herds gather on the southern Serengeti plains for the calving season, when over 500,000 wildebeest calves are born within a few short weeks. By June, the herds begin their dramatic push northward toward the Maasai Mara, culminating in the legendary river crossings at the Mara and Grumeti Rivers between July and October. The return south begins in late October, as short rains trigger the herds' departure from the Mara back toward the Serengeti.

Planning Your Migration Safari

To witness the most dramatic river crossings, plan your visit between July and September in the Maasai Mara. For the calving season, head to the southern Serengeti between February and March. Our safari specialists can design a tailored itinerary that positions you at the right place at the right time, ensuring you experience the full majesty of this natural wonder.
