Buhoma Community Rest Camp
Buhoma Community Rest Camp is a budget-friendly, community-owned safari camp beside Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, offering simple comfortable accommodation, rainforest views and exceptional proximity to the Buhoma gorilla trekking trailhead.
Stay Close to the Forest, Give Back to the Community A welcoming community-owned camp beside Bwindi's Buhoma gate
Established in 1993, Buhoma Community Rest Camp is one of Uganda's pioneering community-based tourism properties. Located immediately beside the Buhoma sector of Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, the camp provides an affordable and authentic base for gorilla trekking, forest walks and community experiences.
The camp's elevated terraces have impressive views across the surrounding rainforest, while its accommodation combines cottages, bandas and camping options. The current official website highlights eight self-contained twin/double cottages, while other current accommodation information also describes safari tents, non-self-contained bandas, a dormitory and campsites.
Its greatest practical advantage is its location: guests staying at the camp are only a few minutes' walk from the Buhoma gorilla trekking starting point. This makes it an especially convenient option for travellers who want to keep accommodation costs down while remaining close to the forest.
The camp also delivers a genuine community tourism experience. Income from guests is channelled through the Buhoma Mukono Community Development Association, supporting projects including Buhoma Community Primary School, Buhoma Community High School, a gravity water scheme, health initiatives and agricultural projects.
It is therefore best suited to budget safari travellers, backpackers, gorilla trekkers, photographers, birders and travellers who deliberately want their accommodation spend to benefit local communities.

Open in Google Maps →By Road from Kampala/Entebbe
The most common route is:
Kampala/Entebbe → Masaka → Mbarara → Ntungamo → Rukungiri → Kihihi → Butogota → Buhoma
Uganda Wildlife Authority describes the Kampala–Rukungiri section as approximately 390 km on paved roads, followed by roughly 82 km of winding murram roads to the Buhoma park headquarters. A 4×4 vehicle is recommended, particularly because roads can become challenging after rain.
By Air
Flights can be arranged from Entebbe International Airport to Kihihi Airstrip, followed by a road transfer. The camp itself arranges airport and airstrip transfers when notified in advance.
Booking.com's current listing places Kihihi Airstrip about 37 km from the property.
From Kigali
Buhoma can also be accessed overland from Rwanda via the Uganda border, making it a practical addition to a Rwanda–Uganda gorilla itinerary. Buhoma sector information gives Kigali–Kabale as approximately 3–4 hours before continuing towards Buhoma.
