GENERAL OVERVIEW
Tsavo West National Park is one of Kenya's most spectacular wilderness destinations, where volcanic landscapes, vast savannahs, emerald hills and palm-fringed waterways create a striking backdrop for safari.
The park is particularly renowned for Mzima Springs, where crystal-clear underground waters emerge through the lava landscape to form lush pools that attract wildlife and abundant birdlife. The dramatic Shetani Lava Flow, Chaimu Hill and the Five Sisters volcanic hills add another dimension to the park's remarkable scenery.
Tsavo West is also home to an impressive diversity of wildlife, including the Big Five, while its expanding rhino conservation landscape gives the park exceptional importance for the protection of black rhinos. In December 2025, Kenya officially opened the expanded Tsavo West Rhino Sanctuary, covering approximately 3,200 km² and described by KWS as the world's largest rhino sanctuary.
Beyond wildlife, Tsavo West carries a fascinating historical legacy. It is famously associated with the legendary man-eating lions of Tsavo, whose attacks during construction of the Kenya–Uganda Railway in 1898 became one of the most enduring stories in African safari history. The park also preserves remnants of the First World War East African Campaign.
From spectacular game drives and Mzima Springs to lava landscapes, rhino conservation and extraordinary sunsets, Tsavo West offers a safari experience where wildlife, geology, history and adventure converge.
