GENERAL OVERVIEW

Situated on the floor of the Great Rift Valley just outside Nakuru city, Lake Nakuru National Park covers 188 km² of diverse habitats. At its heart lies Lake Nakuru, a shallow, endorheic soda lake famous for its blue-green algae (Arthrospira fusiformis). This nutrient-dense water source historically attracts millions of flamingos, creating one of Earth's most breathtaking natural spectacles.

Surrounding the lake is a rich landscape of open grasslands, yellow-barked acacia woodlands, marshlands, dramatic rocky escarpments, and the largest euphoria forest in East Africa (Euphorbia candelabrum). Iconic elevated lookout points such as Baboon Cliff, Out of Africa, and Lion Hill provide panoramic views of the entire lake basin. Because the entire park is protected by a perimeter electric fence, wildlife densities remain exceptionally high year-round. Visitors can observe thriving populations of white and black rhinos, African buffaloes, waterbucks, lions, and tree-climbing leopards within a relatively short game drive.

In recent years, rising Rift Valley water levels have dynamically altered the lake's salinity and footprint, shifting waterbird feeding grounds and driving vegetation changes. Despite these ecological shifts, Lake Nakuru remains one of Kenya's most vital wildlife refuges and accessible safari destinations. Note that because the park is fully fenced, wild elephants are absent.

FAQS

While flamingos are present year-round, their exact numbers fluctuate based on water levels and algae concentration. Rising water levels in recent years have reduced algae density, leading some flocks to disperse across nearby Rift Valley lakes like Lake Bogoria and Lake Elementaita.

No. Because the park is fully enclosed by an electric fence to protect rhinos and prevent human-wildlife conflict with nearby urban Nakuru, elephants are not present.

Yes, it is one of the best locations in East Africa to see both black and white rhinos. White rhinos graze in open lakefront grasslands, while black rhinos are often spotted in the acacia thickets.

The park is approximately 160 km northwest of Nairobi, accessible via a 3- to 3.5-hour drive on a paved highway.
